Healthy Directions: Nutrition for Seniors Pamphlet

Nutrition for Seniors Pamphlet

This Nutrition for Seniors pamphlet addresses dietary needs for healthy seniors. In the retirement years, senior citizens have a wonderful opportunity to relax and catch up on things for which they never had time before. To some, this freedom also means that they stop paying attention to maintaining a balanced diet and instead, rely on convenient and processed food. But it’s in these “golden years” that proper nutrition becomes more important than ever.

Standard nutritional guidelines don’t change once a person is over the age of 60. They should still eat many fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. If healthy eating has been a lifelong habit, then there shouldn’t be any problem continuing on that path. Seniors who have never paid attention to their nutrition should start immediately. They may be more likely to develop serious diseases because of their past nutritional habits.

Caloric needs change as a person grows older. Many seniors spend less time engaging in physical activity and as such, their bodies don’t burn as many calories. Older individuals should adjust their caloric intake to match their activity level. This adjustment should not entail skipping meals, however. Not eating can lead to malnutrition, which is a common issue among senior citizens.

Growing older may also affect an individual’s ability to process food effectively. Spicy and acidic foods should be avoided and fiber intake should increase. Poor oral health can also contribute to problems processing food as it may become more difficult to chew and swallow.

Seniors should pay attention to their diet to ensure that they are getting enough of certain nutrients, namely fiber, calcium, and vitamins.

Fiber is crucial for digestive health and it also fights high cholesterol. Calcium helps to strengthen bones, which can grow weaker with age. And vitamins can help maintain brain function and eyesight, among other things. Supplements can be taken to provide these nutrients, but if possible, seniors should try to add foods that are rich in these nutrients to their diet.

This nutrition for seniors pamphlet addresses how important healthy eating habits are for geriatrics. Healthy eating habits can help to ward off a number of disease as a person ages. Controlling sugar intake may prevent diabetes from developing. Obesity can contribute to diabetes and heart disease and it also negatively affects joints and the skeletal system. Limiting excessive calorie and fat consumption is helpful in maintaining an ideal weight. Issues like high cholesterol and blood pressure might lead to heart attacks or strokes. Increasing fiber and reducing fatty foods can help to reduce the risk of these problems.

Senior citizens need to pay attention to their sodium intake as too much of it can lead to high blood pressure. Checking food labels and using salt substitutions can make it easier to ensure that the appropriate guidelines are being followed. Cognitive ability and mental health can be affected by a poor diet.

A diet that’s rich in nutrients can help to stave off dementia and cognitive decline.

Many seniors don’t get enough exercise, which may impair their digestive abilities. Exercise does not need to include vigorous sessions of weight training or cardiovascular activities. But adding regular walks to the weekly routine can be enough to benefit physical health.

The “golden years” include many changes, both physical and mental. By paying attention to these changes and adjusting course as necessary, seniors can maximize their vitality.

Healthy Directions: Nutrition for Adults Pamphlet

Nutrition for Adults Pamphlet

This pamphlet provides a thorough look at the basics of nutrition, ensuring that adults will understand what they can do to improve their health.

It begins by noting that most people do not pay enough attention to what they eat as there may be nothing to indicate that their diet isn’t balanced. Health problems that arise later in life are frequently due to the body not getting what it needed to ensure a long and healthy life. Poor nutritional habits can be so ingrained that some no longer pay attention to them.

The best course of action is to combine a balanced diet with a good exercise routine. This pairing allows the body to build muscle mass and burn fat. It also wards off obesity, diabetes, and other serious health issues that can affect lifespan.

Modern society has made it very easy to eat poorly. Convenient food options are often high in calories, fat, and sodium. While improving eating habits takes time and dedication, the commitment to a healthier lifestyle is well worth it. Once a person becomes accustomed to eating healthy foods, they start to lose their desire to indulge in junk food.

The body needs a good mix of a variety of nutrients found in the different food groups.

Within the food groups, some choices are better than others. For protein, lean meats, seafood, and beans are the best options. Vegetables should be eaten raw or minimally cooked to preserve their nutritional value. And whole grains are the grain of choice.

Many adults are deficient in the following nutrients: fiber, calcium, and vitamins and minerals. Fiber is essential for proper digestion and cholesterol control. It’s found in whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. Calcium helps to maintain strong and healthy bones. Vitamins and minerals help all of the body’s systems, from skin and hair to eyesight and brain functioning. Raw fruit and vegetables are wonderful sources of vitamins and minerals.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are several items that adults often get too much of in their daily diet. Fats, cholesterol, and sodium can be detrimental to health when consumed in excess. Fats, especially saturated and trans fats, lead to obesity. Cholesterol impacts arteries and the heart. Too much sodium increases blood pressure. Food labels can provide valuable insight as to which foods have acceptable levels of each of these items.

Good eating habits can be difficult to establish, particularly if a person is used to salty, sugary, or fatty foods. But once a person becomes adjusted to healthy foods, their cravings for unhealthy foods diminish. The same goes for adding exercise to a daily routine. It may be hard to start, but the longer it continues, the more enjoyable it becomes.

Healthy Directions: Nutrition for Growing Children Pamphlet

Healthy Directions: Nutrition for Growing Children Pamphlet

Both new and experienced parents will find the “Nutrition for Growing Children” pamphlet to be a valuable resource. Full of tips and information, this pamphlet will help parents to ensure that their children are getting what they need for proper development.

The first section of the pamphlet addresses how a balanced diet factors in to a child’s development. Growing children need a good balance of different nutrients, which can be found by following the principles of the five food groups. The largest obstacle to maintaining a healthy diet comes from junk food. Things like candy, soft drinks, and fast food are widely available and parents are not always there to direct their children away from these choices.

In combination with healthy eating habits, exercise should be a part of the daily routine. Regular physical activity helps to develop muscle and maintain health. School athletics, house or yard work, and family activities or outings can provide children with all the exercise they need.

From the time they are born, children’s dietary needs change constantly. Each stage of life has unique nutrient needs. When these needs are met, children will be happy, healthy, and energetic. For infants and toddlers, the transition from milk or formula to solid foods (grains, fruits, and vegetables) should be gradual. Pediatricians can assist with determining when this transition should happen.

Young children need to consume many vitamins and minerals to promote healthy growth. During this stage, adequate calcium is very important to ensure appropriate skeletal development. The standard food group guidelines are useful as starting points in building a balanced diet. Salty, sugary, and fatty foods should be avoided or kept at a minimum.

As children become teenagers, parents will find it even more difficult to make sure they’re getting a balanced diet.

Teenagers make more of their own food decisions and unhealthy choices are available everywhere. But, by keeping a ready supply of healthy foods at home and getting teenagers into healthy eating habits, parents can help to protect their child’s health.

Parents should be aware of what their children are eating, whether it’s at a friend’s house or at school. Until a child can make healthy choices on their own, parents must take that responsibility on. This may include monitoring their child’s decisions when eating out, establishing rules about snacking, and determining what their child has eaten when not at home.

Keeping an out eye out for warning signs can help tip parents off to the fact that their child may not be eating a healthy diet. Excess weight, a lack of energy, or developmental problems may indicate an unbalanced or unhealthy diet. If a child is not getting the proper nutrients, pediatricians can assist with correcting any dietary deficiencies.

The pamphlet goes on to address food allergies. There are steps that parents should take when their children try certain foods for the first time. Because some allergies can be life threatening, it’s important that parents pay attention to foods like fruits, nuts, fish, and dairy products.

Developing healthy eating habits early on in life not only promotes proper development, but it can help to ensure a healthy adulthood as well.

Healthy Directions: How to Read Food Labels Pamphlet

How to Read Food Labels Pamphlet

Food labels can be confusing, but they don’t have to be with this How to Read Food Labels Pamphlet. It discusses the different elements of food labels and identifies what consumers should be on the lookout for. Consumers will learn to use food labels to maximize their health.

While food labels have been a prominent part of food packaging for the past 20 years, they are an overlooked and valuable tool for guiding healthy eating habits. Phrases like “all natural” or “low fat” can be persuasive. The truth of a food’s nutritional content is found in the food label. This brochure provides consumers with everything they need to know about reading food labels and making healthy choices.

In the early 1990s, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began requiring nutrition labels on packaged foods.

These labels were the first step in ensuring that manufacturers were honest about their products’ nutritional values. They also enabled consumers to examine every ingredient in a food item to determine the food’s caloric, fat, sodium, and cholesterol content.

Food labels present information based on the Daily Value (DV) system. The DV system identifies the amount of certain nutrients in food products and how those amounts stack up to the FDA’s recommended daily allowance (RDA) of nutrients. Labels are broken down into four sections: serving size, caloric content, nutrients to limit, and nutrients. Serving size can be vexing as one package may include several servings.

Caloric content is valuable information as it is useful for ensuring weight loss or maintenance. This section also includes a “Calories from Fat” section. Healthier food choices have a low calories/calories from fat ratio. A serving of food with 200 calories and 30 calories from fat is a better nutritional choice than a serving with 200 calories and 150 calories from fat.

Nutrients to limit include fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

While the body needs these things in order to function, they should be consumed in moderation. Many types of packaged food are especially high in sodium. So, if one serving has 35% of your RDA of sodium but the package has two servings, that equals almost a whole day’s worth of sodium.

Nutrients to look for are found under “Total Carbohydrates” and at the bottom of the food label. Healthier food items should also have high percentages of vitamins, calcium, and iron.

Instead of paying attention to the advertising on food packaging (“Fat Free,” “Healthy,” etc.), consumers should focus on the information on the nutrition label and even the list of ingredients. Items may boast low fat but they have a high sodium content or they may state that one of their ingredients is 100% real, but the ingredient list shows that that food has less than 2% of the ingredient in question.

Comparing food labels between similar products can give consumers a leg up on attaining dietary goals. And tracking nutrition is especially easy with the numerous online resources and smartphone apps that are available.

Once reviewing food labels becomes routine, it’s that much easier to maintain healthy eating habits.

Healthy Directions: Your Plate and Portion Pamphlet

Your Plate and Portion Pamphlet

“Your Plate and Portion” Pamphlet will make it easy for your audience to take control of their health goals. In the quest to maximize health and maintain healthy eating habits, the first step is to establish a basic knowledge of nutritious food choices. The second step is to develop a good understanding of proper portion sizes. Popular misconceptions may derail the health efforts of people who think they are eating well.

A balanced diet is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. But many people think that a balanced diet just means more vegetables and fewer desserts. In fact, a healthy diet includes all of the five food groups in proper proportions. Nutritionists have come up with many ways to visually demonstrate the optimal amount of each food group in a diet, including the Food Pyramid and MyPlate. While these guides are constantly evolving, they do provide a good starting point for understanding a diet’s important elements. “Your Plate and Portion” Pamphlet discusses portion size, a healthy diet and more.

Working toward attaining nutrition goals is a process that is best achieved through small and manageable steps.

Start by using smaller plates for meals. Frequently, people serve themselves based on the size of the plate they’re using. One serving of food on a large plate may not look like enough compared to one serving of food on a smaller plate.

Keeping a food journal may help with developing awareness with regard to exactly how much of a food you should (or shouldn’t) be eating. These changes in habits take long term dedication. Although the results may not be immediately visible, they are more likely to last as there are good habits to support them. And realistic goals help to prevent feelings of deprivation.

The guidelines set forth for each food group have been designed to provide the body with the right amount of nutrients. A healthy diet should include 6 to 8 ounces of grains per day. The best grains are whole grains as they include the most amount of fiber. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of fruit is approximately 2 cups, while the RDA of vegetables is 3 cups. Snacking on fruits and vegetables and incorporating vegetables into every meal helps to meet these recommendations.

The body needs 5 to 6 ounces of protein every day.

The protein can come from meats or fish, beans, eggs, or nuts. If meat is the protein source, lean meats like poultry and seafood are the best choices. Some oils have essential nutrients, but there’s usually little or no reason to go out of one’s way to add them to a diet. Oils that are high in monounsaturated fat, oleic acid, and omega-3 fatty acids are the best choices, but they should still be used sparingly. Extras include food items that are full of preservatives, chemical additives, and artificial flavors.

It’s very difficult to estimate portion sizes and it’s even easier to overlook them, especially if the food is a favorite. At home, keep measuring cups, spoons, or a scale handy to ensure that portions are accurate. In restaurants, it’s almost always correct to assume that you are being served more than one serving. Don’t feel bad about leaving food on the plate or taking it home as a meal for another day.

Snacking can play a large part in diet efforts. It’s easy to snack absentmindedly and overdo it. And many popular snack foods aren’t very healthy, like cookies, chips, and candy bars. Replacing these unhealthy choices with healthy ones is an easy way to keep health efforts on track. Fruits, vegetables, low-fat yogurt, or a handful of nuts are great choices that are filling and full of nutrients.

Transitioning to a healthier lifestyle can be challenging with the stresses and hectic nature of everyday life. But small changes, awareness, and commitment will ease this transition and ultimately, lead to a better quality of life.

Healthy Directions: Reducing Sodium Pamphlet

Reducing Sodium Pamphlet

Educate your community about healthy eating with this informative Reducing Sodium Pamphlet. Establishing healthy eating habits involves several different factors like maintaining an appropriate caloric intake, consuming limited amounts of fat and cholesterol, and getting adequate fiber. What most people overlook, however, is the amount of sodium they’re ingesting every day. While sodium is an important nutrient, it’s also found in excess in many foods. Especially in frozen packaged ones. This Reducing Sodium Intake brochure begins by noting that sodium occurs most commonly in the mineral salt. Salt is the most familiar source of sodium in the human diet. Often found in artificial preservatives and flavorings.

Too much or too little sodium in the diet can lead to many health problems. Sodium plays a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance in the body and conducting nerve impulses. Most people consume too much sodium every day, frequently without knowing it.

The body needs at least 500 milligrams of sodium each day. The FDA suggests that most individuals should not consume more than 2300 milligrams per day. Some groups, like the elderly or those with high blood pressure, should limit themselves to 1500 milligrams per day. One teaspoon of salt contains the RDA of sodium.

Consuming too much sodium on a regular basis may lead to high blood pressure. Moreover, consistently high blood pressure puts a lot of strain on the heart. Excess sodium in the diet also strains the kidneys, making them less effective and more prone to failure as time goes on.

It’s easy to get used to high amounts of sodium in food.

Especially when a diet consists of mainly processed foods or from restaurants. Individuals who partake in a natural diet with lean meats, vegetables, and whole grains typically have less of a taste for salty foods. Salt can help to bring out the flavors in food, which can result in disastrous consequences for senior citizens. With age, the tongue becomes less able to taste flavors. Senior citizens may compensate for this by adding too much salt to their food, ultimately impacting their kidneys as well as blood pressure.

Popular high sodium foods include potato chips, crackers, vegetable juice, canned soup, and cured meats. Other foods like bagels and breads may be high in sodium as well. Reduced daily sodium intake by avoiding processed and packaged foods.

Other simple steps can help to reduce daily sodium intake as well. Checking nutrition labels and tracking every day’s total sodium intake can help to keep it in check. Some individuals salt their food before even tasting it as this action has become an ingrained habit.

The palate will take time to adjust as sodium intake is reduced. The first few days of this transition may be the most difficult, but with time, salty foods will become less enjoyable. As with many healthy endeavors, small and manageable steps are the keys in successfully reducing sodium intake.

Healthy Directions: Eat Right- Live Longer Pamphlet

Eat Right Live Longer Pamphlet

Teach your community how to eat right with this informative pamphlet. With almost 35% of U.S. adults considered obese, eating right is more important than ever. The phrase “eating right” often conjures images of bland and tasteless food reserved for those who are looking to completely overhaul their diet or for those who may be considered “health nuts.” In reality, everyone should be paying attention to eating right. Healthy eating habits are a large factor in longevity. This pamphlet will help your audience understand the consequences of unhealthy food choices.

Choosing healthy options for meals and snacks can be difficult. Schedules are busy and much of our days are spent sitting in the office, the car, or at home. And with convenience based foods, like those that you cook in the microwave, it can be far easier to cook something unhealthy than to prepare a balanced meal. In addition, produce and lean meats are often more expensive than packaged and processed foods, which may add to the convenience factor. In the long term, though, these easy choices may lead to expensive medical bills.

Fast food options are frequently tempting especially when pressed for time or when faced with a dearth of options. Many fast food meals are high in calories, sodium, cholesterol, and fat, which can put a strain on your system. Planning ahead makes it easier to avoid this trap. Packing lunches the night before, using leftovers, or keeping fresh groceries at work are just some of the tricks that can keep fast food off the menu.

Snacks are an important part of the daily diet and they’re also frequently overlooked. Snacking can be a mindless habit, allowing people to munch away without paying any attention to what or how much they’re eating. The calories from snacks do add up, so it’s important to replace foods like candy bars or potato chips with raw vegetables and fruits.

As the body ages, the metabolism changes. Young adults may not immediately see the ill effects of their poor eating habits, but with time, the consequences will show themselves in the form of health problems. Individuals who consume too much sugar may develop diabetes, which will require daily medical attention. Heart issues may arise, either due to excess cholesterol or weight. These factors may make the heart pump harder, leading to strokes, heart attacks, or cardiac arrest.

Bones and joints may also suffer due to excess weight and poor nutrition. Without adequate nutrients, bones and joints are unable to rebuild themselves and are more likely to fracture or break. Nutrients are also crucial in ensuring maximum brain function. Unhealthy eating habits may deprive the brain of important vitamins and minerals, leading to impaired functioning or dementia.

The first step in moving toward embracing a healthy lifestyle is actually quite easy. It entails making small dietary and habit changes one step at a time. Changes like replacing soft drinks with water, fruit for candy bars, or homemade meals for fast food will make a large difference with time.

Food labels can be helpful in determining the best dietary choices. Items with high fat, cholesterol, sodium, or carbohydrates may negatively affect healthy eating habits. Food that contains vitamins A, B, C, calcium, and iron are especially beneficial.

Healthy Directions: Healthy Beverages Pamphlet

Healthy Beverages Pamphlet

Raise your glass to wholesome living with this “Healthy Beverages” Pamphlet. While there used to be only a limited number of beverage choices available, the beverage market has exploded to include hundreds, maybe thousands, of choices. And while eating can be an absentminded task, drinking is even more so. The problem with beverages that aren’t water is that they may contain lots of sugar and be high in calories. So, while it may not seem like a big deal to have several beverages in the course of a day, the calories do add up.

Thinking About Your Drink

The pamphlet begins by discussing energy drinks, which are some of the least healthy beverage options out there. While they are popular because of the energy boost they provide, they are full of caffeine and sugar. Consuming too many of these drinks may lead to dehydration and an increased heart rate.

Although some studies have suggested that certain alcoholic drinks in moderation may have health benefits, many alcoholic drinks are full of sugar and high in calories. Alcohol causes dehydration and in excess it can cause irreparable organ and brain damage.

Soft drinks are another popular beverage choice. They, too, are high in calories and full of sugar. The highest calorie sodas are about 200 calories per serving with as many as 10 to 11 teaspoons of sugar in them. Some people may opt for diet sodas believing that because they have no calories that they’re a safer alternative. However, studies have shown that these artificial sweeteners increase appetite. Recent studies also suggest a link between diet sodas and heart disease.

Keeping a Healthy Balance

Sports drinks are frequently advertised as the choice of top athletes with extreme hydrating capabilities. These drinks do contain electrolytes, which help with hydration during heavy physical exertion. Large quantities of these drinks can lead to dehydration because of their high sodium content. Sports drinks should be consumed in moderation and only when exercise or other physical exertion lasts over an hour.

Many people drink coffee or tea on a regular basis, but there are some drawbacks to these beverages. They contain caffeine, which can be habit forming, and they can cause tooth damage. On the bright side, though, tea contains antioxidants and coffee has been linked to a lower risk of diabetes. As with everything else, these beverages should be consumed in moderation.

Fruit and vegetable juices can be an easy way to incorporate extra servings of fruit and vegetables into your diet. Consumers need to be label conscious, however. These drinks should be 100% juice. They should not contain extra sugar or corn syrup. And in the case of vegetable juice, keep an eye on the sodium content. They may also be high in calories, so pay attention to the serving size.

Healthy Drinks

A relatively new addition to the beverage market is vitamin water. Vitamin water, as the name suggests, usually contains high amounts of vitamins B, C, potassium, and other nutrients. It can be very beneficial if you have not been getting enough of these vitamins. Some of them may have a high sugar content, which can derail diet or healthy eating efforts.

Milk is a good beverage choice, as it’s high in calcium, protein, and vitamin D. Some research even suggests that chocolate milk is the ideal drink after a strenuous workout. When choosing milk, opt for low fat instead of whole to get the essential nutrients without the high fat content.

Last but not least, there’s water. Water is the healthiest beverage you can drink. It has no calories and it helps you stay hydrated. For most people 2 to 3 liters of water per day is ideal to maintain health and hydration.
